Schwerer Gustav (English: Heavy Gustaf, or Great Gustaf) and Dora were the names of two German 80 cm K (E) ultra-heavy railway guns. They were developed in the late 1930s by Krupp as siege artillery for the explicit purpose of destroying the main forts of the French Maginot Line, the strongest fortifications then in existence. The twin guns weighed nearly 1,350 tonnes, and could fire shells weighing seven tonnes to a range of 47 kilometers (29 mi). The guns were designed in preparation for the Battle of France, but were not ready for action when the battle began, and in any case the Wehrmacht’s Blitzkrieg offensive through Belgium rapidly outflanked and isolated the Maginot Line’s World War I-era static defenses, forcing them to surrender uneventfully and making their destruction unnecessary.

John Downing (Getty). Conferencia del Partido Conservador del Reino Unido, Grand Hotel, Brighton, Sussex del Este, Inglaterra, 12 de octubre de 1984. Un atentado terrorista del Ejército Republicano de Irlanda (IRA, Provisional Irish Republican Army) que tenía la intención de asesinar a la entonces Primer Ministro del Reino Unido, Margaret Tatcher, dejó el saldo de 5 muertos, entre ellos los miembros del Parlamento Sir Anthony Berry y Eric Taylor, y 34 heridos, varios de ellos quedando paralíticos de por vida. La Señora Tatcher sobrevivió por encontrarse en otra habitación.

Entre los heridos estaba el miembro del gabinete Norman Tebbit, que al ser conducido a un hospital y consultado respecto a qué sustancias era alérgico, dio la famosa respuesta de “a las bombas”.

There was no mystery in the tactics by which Alexander’s Macedonians, the Romans, the Mongols, Gustavus’ Swedes, Frederick’s Prussians, Wellington’s Peninsular infantry, won their repeated triumphs. Only a matchless harmony of execution through practice and understanding which gave them the advantage no rival and imitator could overtake. Secrecy leads to rigidity of tactics; open discussion and criticism, to flexibility and the well-attuned initiative of subordinates where confronted with the unexpected.
